Ashot Kirakosyan (77 kg) won a silver medal in the Georgian city of Batumi. Another young wrestler, Ruben Hakobyan (63 kg) has become a bronze medalist.
The Armenian National Olympic Committee (NOC) website has interviewed the Armenian youth team coach Armen Babalaryan. The latter noted that their main squad did not take part in the tournament.
“I'm not satisfied with the results; we could have done more. The competition was complicated, there were legendary wrestlers, but we were not weak, too. There were victories, where our boys won 7: 0, 5: 0, but lost at the last minute. I can explain it this way: mainly the wrestlers who have just joined the youth team from the junior team participated from our side. For teenagers, as you know, the event is held for 2 minutes and 2 rounds, and it’s been 3 minutes. We have a special approach to trainings and programs so that the transition is done correctly, and the boys will be able to endure,” - said Armen Babalaryan, senior coach of the Armenian youth team.
We should add that the Greco-Roman wrestling team of Armenia will participate in another major international tournament in Kaspiysk on April 4-8.
