Filip Polc: “I have never cried when riding a bicycle”
Interview with Filip Polc.
Downhill master, multiple champion of extreme mountain biking, legendary Slovakian Filip Polc also has dreams and goals. Filip is in Yerevan, and I took the opportunity and sat down for an interview. Read on to see what I found out. Why did you choose downhill mountain biking? Filip Polc: Downhill is a sport that is linked to nature. Over time, I realized that it’s more than just a sport for me. I started Downhill when I was 15 and have been enjoying it ever since. Don’t you get afraid? F. P.: If I was afraid, I probably wouldn’t have started. There can always be mistakes, especially if you’re moving at a rapid pace. That’s when something unpredictable can happen to you. You have to calculate everything since there is a very high risk factor. Do you remember the last time you cried? F. P.: Of course, I remember. I was watching a program about extreme accidents and started crying. Sometimes when I’m alone and am watching a film, I enjoy it, but I have never cried when riding a bike, regardless of the fact that the wind often cools my eyes when I ride very fast. They say each person has to try everything in life. Do you agree? F. P.: That’s impossible. There will come a day when everything will be over. You can’t achieve everything. What do you want the most? F. P.: I’m not married, but I do have a girlfriend. Perhaps the thing that I want most is to start a family, help people and the new generation. If tomorrow was the last day of your life, what would you do? F. P.: I’m happy. I live in the present. I always try to think of positive things. I’m a happy person because I have traveled to many countries, have met many people and have become familiar with different cultures. The most valuable aspect of my sport is that I can travel to the most distant lands with my bike and simply live and enjoy life. You can’t do Downhill forever. What do you picture doing in 20 years? F. P.: I imagine having children. I think I’ll have big children in 20 years and they will be more extreme than me. Would you like them to get involved in this sport? F. P.: They might choose a sport that is less extreme, like golf. What is a book or film that each person must read or watch? F. P.: That’s a tough question. If you ask me how to ride a bike, I can answer easily. When you read, you develop your imagination, but that’s not enough. You have to try it. It doesn’t matter how you feel about great leaps. You have to start step-by-step. You have to dream, try, and in that process, you’ll become stronger and more skillful, and it will be easier for you to do everything you have dreamed of. What are you proud of? F. P.: I’m proud of the fact that people can survive in life. However, many people don’t want to be in nature, and that’s why they die at a young age. I hope people understand this and start being in nature. I’m proud that I became a champion. I achieve all my goals (the last one is very important). What are your plans for the future? F. P.: Next year I’ll be traveling to Chile, Brazil, Holland, Bratislava, and later to Mexico and New Zealand. Gallery: Filip Polc Lilit Sedrakyan
