Armenian sport of 2009 has been full of medals
RA Minister of Sport and Youth Affairs during the press conference, summarizing the year, assured that this year the index of our sportsmen’s participation in international competitions has increased. Consequently, the number of athletes who have succeeded has increased too.
In 2009 the judoists were the first who came to international arena. Armenian National Team of Judo succeeded in the international contest held in Greece. 4 judoists out of 19 won medals. The most successful was Arman Soghomonyan in the weight category of 81 kg. Heading over all his rivals he stood on the highest step of honor pedestal and won a medal. Greek Roman Style wrestlers’ team also succeeded in World Cup Competition which was held in France and took the third place. Armenian wrestlers defeated Hungarian team by scores 6-1 and later beat Azerbaijani too by 4-3. In final Armenian team gave in Russia and took the second place and received right for content for bronze medal. In this competition the rival of Armenia was the team of Cuba. Our wrestlers won by scores 5-2 and gained bronze medal. The champion title went to Russia; its team beat over France by 5-2. In the sport hall “Orleans” of Las Vegas, US, Armenian sportsmen of Docendo Full contact Karate champions succeeded in Olympic competitions. All 12 participants returned with medals; 7 out of them won gold medals. In the competition of elders stood out and won medals Karen Nahapetyan, Edik Ghazaryan and Hakob Terjanyan. In young category succeeded Eduard Zanazyan (17 years old), Vladimir Nal5yan (16), Davit Abgaryan (14) and Garik Hovhannisyan (13) and again gained gold medals. Weightlifting Europe Championship held in Bucharest participated 10 athletes and 4 of them won gold medals. In the weight category of 69kg Arakel Mirzoyan won small gold medal and silver medals. Nazik Avdalyan (69kg) and Hripsime Khurshudyan (75kg) became ex-champions of Europe Championship; one silver and one bronze medals won in different exercises. Meline Daluzyan (63kg) won silver medal in jerk exercise. In National Men’s team of Armenia took place changes this year. In Bucharest will not perform Gevorg Davtyan, Ara Khachatryan, Tigran V. Martirosyan and Tigran G. Martirosyan.Gevorg Davtyan (77kg) had back injury and operation was performed on knee of Ara Khachatryanand he could not participate in World Weightlifting. He was injured in Beijing Olympiad games. In April, in Vilnius was held Greek Roman Style Wrestlers Europe Championship. The free style participants gained 1silver, 2 bronze; the participants of Greek Roman Style wrestlers were more successful. Due to Arsen Julfalakyan and Yuri Patikeev in Vilnius sport hall sounded Armenian National Anthem and our tricolor flag was raised. In May, in Milan was held Sambo Europe Championship and 4 of Armenian athletes won medals. Vahan Hovhannisyan (62kg) defeated his rivals from Lithia and Azerbayjan. Competing for the third place he won French rival Anton Lobrechin and won bronze medal. Davit Khachatryan (68kg) was also successful. In the first hand-to-hand fight he was beat by an Azerbaijani but as he was in final he had right to continue the fight. In the decisive he won Bulgarian Stepan Shopovin and won bronze medal. In May judoists succeeded in an international arena. In the International Youth Championship Armenian team took the first place. 6 judoists, Erjanik Karapetyan(48kg), Garik Harutyunyan (50kg), Davit Nikoghostan (55kg), Davit Ghazaryan(60kg), Mher Tavaqalayan (73kg) and Arthur Kroyan(81kg) stood on the highest step of honor pedestal winning over all their rivals. Two participants took the second place; Gevorg Torosyan(60kg) and Arman Soghomonyan (81kg). From May 23-30 K. Demirchyan Sport-Complex was in the center of attention world boxing, as World Youth Championship was held here.7 out of 13 Armenian boxers won medals (1 gold, 2 silvers, 4 bronze). Armenian National Team took the second place, giving in Russian team which won 5 gold, and 4 bronze medals. Last day of final Koryun Soghomonyan gained the title of World Champion and was recognized the best boxer of the championship. The sport end of year was significant by 2 events: “Hatis” Women Basketball team foundation and World Weightlifting Championship in Goyang, South Korea. “Hatis” stood out by its victory over Russian “Chevakata” and Turkish “Besiktas”. In World Weightlifting Championship Armenians gained great victories. In the history of independent Armenia, Armenian Female weightlifter, Nazik Avdalyan won the title of World Champion. Arakel Mirzoyan and Tigran G. Martirosyan became winners of silver medal, and Hripsime Khurshudyan won bronze medal. All the best athletes of year received awards by state Armenian National Olympic Committee.
