2015 World Sambo Championships
The 2015 World Sambo Championships will be held in Casablanca, Morocco from November 12 to 16.
This is the 40th Championship and the first to take place in Africa. The top athletes from 85 countries will put their strengths to the test in 9 weight categories of men’s and women’s athletic sambo and only the men’s combat sambo. Armenia’s athletes will also be competing for the 27 collections of medals. The World Sambo Championships have been held since 1973, and it’s clear that Armenian samboists would be included in the team of the USSR prior to the declaration of independence of the Republic of Armenia. Let us recall that Garnik Hovhannisyan was the first Armenian samboist to be declared a world champion in 1981. Until then, Armenian athletes hadn’t achieved such great success in any one of the wrestling sports. Hovhannisyan was followed by Gagik Ghazaryan, Gurgen Tutkhalyan, Hovik Manukyan, Artur Grigoryan, Yervand Grigoryan, Kristine Najaryan, Arevik Karapetyan and dozens of other athletes. The members of the current Armenian sambo team are world champions Ashot Danielyan, Vatchik Vardanyan, Mavrik Nasibyan, two-time European champion Tigran Kirakosyan, vice-champion Ernest Hayrapetyan, bronze medalist Maxim Manukyan and others. The Armenian delegation will be led by President of the Armenian Sambo Federation Levon Hayrapetyan and will be leaving for Casablanca on November 11. www.sambo.am
